The Guangdong Dongguang team suffered an 88-73 defeat against the Beijing men’s basketball team at the Beijing Shougang home court on the evening of May 12, concluding the CBA playoff quarterfinal series. This loss marks the second consecutive season Guangdong has failed to advance to the semifinals.

Following a dramatic overtime victory in Game 2 at home, where Zhang Haojia hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to extend the series, Guangdong entered the decisive Game 3 with hope. However, the team only managed a slight edge in the first quarter before Beijing gradually seized control of the tempo. The second half, in particular, saw Beijing dominate the paint, relentlessly attacking the rim and effectively sealing the game early.

Statistical disparities underscored the loss, as Guangdong shot just 35.2% from the field, including a dismal 8-of-31 from beyond the arc. Additionally, the team attempted 20 fewer free throws than their opponents.

After the game, Guangdong head coach Du Feng reflected on the challenging season, stating, “It was a very difficult campaign. We started with an incomplete roster, then faced injuries, and struggled through many ups and downs.” He expressed gratitude to all supporters and acknowledged the nature of competitive sports: “Nobody wants to lose, but that’s how it is. There’s only one champion. I wish all remaining teams the best of luck in putting on great performances and achieving their goals.”

With this defeat, Guangdong’s season comes to an end. Beijing, along with Shanghai and Shenzhen, advance to the semifinals. Beijing will face Shanghai in the next round.
