Former NBA Slam Dunk Champion Desmond Mason Arrested on Felony Theft Warrant Over Missing $40,000 Memorabilia

Posted on: 05/13/2026

Former NBA player Desmond Mason was arrested last Thursday in Oklahoma City on a felony theft warrant issued by the state of Texas.

According to multiple reports, police took Mason into custody in the Bricktown area of downtown Oklahoma City. After his arrest, Mason was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment before being transported to the Oklahoma County Detention Center. Records indicate he was booked as a “flight risk.”

The case stems from a dispute that began in spring 2025. A couple in Collin County, Texas, filed a complaint with the Melissa Police Department in January 2026, stating they had hired Mason in March 2025 to frame a piece of sports memorabilia and paid him $9,822.86. The memorabilia and its certification documents were valued at approximately $40,000. According to the couple, Mason sent proof of completion in April 2025 and promised to deliver the item, but then cut off contact. He resumed communication in January 2026, attempting to explain the delay. A warrant for his arrest was issued in February.

Mason played 10 seasons in the NBA. He was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2000 draft and became the first player in franchise history to win the Slam Dunk Contest. He went on to play for the Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Hornets, and Oklahoma City Thunder, and was waived after five games with the Sacramento Kings in 2009. Mason had previously been incarcerated for contempt of court in a divorce proceeding.
