Paul Magnier’s victory in Sofia capped off the peloton’s journey through Bulgaria, as the race now shifts to Italy for the remaining stages. The Bulgarian chapter featured some unexpected protagonists: Magnier holds the Maglia Ciclamino (purple jersey) after two wins over top favorite Jonathan Milan, the Maglia Azzurra (blue jersey) goes to Spanish rider Diego Sevilla, and Uruguayan Guillermo Silva dons the pink jersey, leading the overall standings by 10 seconds over the favorites. However, the return to Italian terrain and the arrival of mountainous routes are set to disrupt the current order.

Stage 4 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia will start in Catanzaro and finish in Cosenza, with the Cozzo Tunnio climb playing a key role. But the peloton’s entry into Italian roads must wait, as the Corsa Rosa takes a break today.

Why is there no stage today?

The 2026 Giro d’Italia, like all editions, is divided into 21 stages that take the peloton across various parts of Italy—and this year, part of Bulgaria. The competition reserves rest days to allow recovery. The first pause, on May 11, is primarily for logistical reasons, as teams need to travel from Bulgaria to Italy. The race calendar includes two more rest days, both for recovery purposes.

When is the next stage?

The next Giro d’Italia stage, starting in Catanzaro and finishing in Cosenza, will take place on Tuesday, May 12. It features a 138-kilometer route with an average elevation gain of 1,800 meters and one categorized climb: the Cozzo Tunnio (Category 2, 5.9 km at 11%). Its steepness and strategic placement are expected to heavily influence the stage’s outcome.
