Nottingham Forest 1-0 Aston Villa
A second-half penalty converted by Chris Wood gave Nottingham Forest a slender advantage over Aston Villa in their Europa League clash at the City Ground. Unai Emery’s side, who had strung together nine consecutive wins in the competition, now face an uphill battle to overturn the deficit heading into the second leg in Birmingham.

Two former European champions from the English Midlands, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, met with dreams of continental glory. Neither wanted to make a mistake that could jeopardize the remainder of the tie. However, a soft penalty conceded by Lucas Digne and calmly slotted home by Chris Wood handed Forest the lead. Emery’s men will need to show greater resilience to turn the situation around.
It was the most important match of the season, and neither team held back. Nottingham Forest were more affected by absences, with Morato covering for Murillo alongside Milenkovic in defense. Without Hudson-Odoi, Vitor Pereira stuck with the Wood-Igor Jesus partnership, shifting Gibbs-White to a false-left-wing role. Aston Villa fielded their strongest XI after recovering Onana in time to partner Tielemans in midfield.
Forest started aggressively, pressing high without hesitation. But Aston Villa were unfazed, comfortable playing out from pressure through Tielemans and exploiting space with runs from Rogers and Watkins. The Belgian tested Stefan Ortega early with a long-range effort that was tipped over for a corner.
Gradually, Villa tried to take control by suffocating Forest’s build-up play, but beyond a few runs from Hutchinson, Forest struggled to advance. Villa’s best chance came from a counterattack finished by Morgan Rogers, whose shot from the edge of the box forced another save from Ortega.
Forest needed stability and found it through Elliot Anderson, who became the focal point to turn the game. From his feet came the best opportunity of the first half, a brilliant pass into Gibbs-White, who then set up Igor Jesus for a tap-in. Emiliano Martinez denied him with a spectacular save, one of the tournament’s finest.
Forest went into the break with momentum, having planted doubts in Villa’s mind. Onana lasted only until the 55th minute before pulling up while attempting to cut out an aerial ball to Wood. Bogarde replaced him, and Watkins soon fired a shot from the heart of the box straight at the keeper.
The visitors regained some composure, but as the tempo dropped, Digne made an avoidable error, raising his arm to concede a penalty. Hutchinson deserved credit for keeping the ball alive and crossing. Chris Wood stepped up, and although Martinez guessed the right side, Wood’s powerful strike found the top corner.
Emery responded by bringing on Douglas Luiz and Jadon Sancho to add creativity. However, Elliott Anderson and Gibbs-White combined on the left to shield the ball, and Forest did not allow Villa to salvage a draw. The tie will be decided at Villa Park.
The second leg promises high drama as both sides chase European glory.
