The Australian golfer secured a commanding wire-to-wire win at LIV Golf Virginia on Sunday, firing a final-round 3-under-par 69 at Trump National DC in Potomac Falls, Va. He finished the tournament at 24 under par, four shots clear of runner-up Sergio Garcia of Spain, who carded a 70 in the final round. Bryson DeChambeau surged over the weekend with rounds of 64 and 66 to claim third place at 19 under, just before teeing off at the PGA Championship next week.

Herbert built an insurmountable lead with opening rounds of 64 and 63, and even a double bogey on the par-3 ninth hole on Sunday didn’t derail his momentum. He closed the day with eight birdies and three bogeys, amassing 29 birdies and one eagle for the week.

Reflecting on the victory, Herbert said, “Probably that I can perform pretty damn well when things aren’t perfect. I was pretty sick all week, and I woke up this morning probably feeling worse than I did the last few days. Sergio was coming at me hard for 36 holes, and he pushed me the whole way, made me earn that one. I didn’t doubt myself. I missed a few putts here and there and made it a contest late.”

A brief weather delay interrupted play late in the round when Herbert held a two-shot lead over Garcia with two holes remaining. “After the rain delay, the way I played those eight shots, I’m so proud of that. I can’t wait to celebrate with everyone tonight,” he added.

The victory also boosted the 30-year-old to third place in the season standings, behind Spain’s Jon Rahm and DeChambeau, earning him a spot in the U.S. Open. Prior to Sunday, Herbert had won on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Asian Tour, but he had been eligible for only two majors since the start of 2024.

“There were so many things that came with winning today. I just wanted to focus on what I was doing and then spend this moment now figuring out what comes with it,” he said. “That’s a nice added bonus.”

Garcia’s day didn’t end with his runner-up finish. The team he captains, Fireballs GC, entered a playoff against 4Aces GC for the team title. Instead of selecting himself, Garcia chose countrymen Josele Ballester—who shot a 12-under 60 on Saturday—and David Puig. 4Aces captain Dustin Johnson picked Anthony Kim and Belgium’s Thomas Detry. On the replay of the par-4 18th hole, all players made par except Puig, sealing the team victory for 4Aces.

“They both played well today. I was a little tired,” said Garcia. “I would have loved to be there, but I was a little too tired. I thought playing from the back, it was a good hole for them. Unfortunately, David got a little unfortunate there on the second shot. He caught a little bit off a flier and couldn’t up-and-down, but it is what it is.”

LIV Golf is scheduled to return May 28-31 with LIV Golf Korea, despite Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund planning to withdraw its financial backing after the 2026 season and the postponement of a June event in New Orleans.
