Mark Vientos and Carson Benge delivered RBI doubles during a two-run 10th inning, helping the New York Mets secure a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix on Friday. This win marked their fourth in the last five games.
Vientos doubled on the first pitch from Kevin Ginkel (1-2) to bring in the automatic runner in the 10th. Benge followed with a ground-rule double that scored Vidal Brujan, who had replaced Vientos as a pinch runner.
Devin Williams (2-1) tossed a scoreless ninth inning on eight pitches to earn the win, while Tobias Myers struck out two of three batters in a perfect 10th for his first save.
The early scoring came from solo home runs by Vientos and Arizona’s Nolan Arenado, each in the second inning.
The Mets, who entered the game tied with San Francisco for the worst record in baseball at 14-23, have now won their last two series and will aim for a sweep on Saturday.
The Diamondbacks have lost 12 of their last 16 games.
Mets starter Nolan McLean allowed one run on three hits over six innings, striking out six and walking one. He also hit a batter while throwing 100 pitches.
Arizona starter Ryne Nelson surrendered one run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings, leaving after walking Benge with two outs in the seventh of a 1-1 tie. That was his only walk, and he matched a season high with seven strikeouts.
Juan Morillo struck out two of the four batters he faced after replacing Nelson, extending his home scoreless streak to 16 games over two seasons, the longest in the majors.
Vientos led off the Mets’ second with a 401-foot
